Presented by Mark C. Nation, DMD Occlusion is foundational to any prosthodontic rehabilitation. Prosthodontists not only must understand the scope of influence occlusion has on oral structures, but also the impact occlusion has with relation to the entire body system. We must not limit ourselves as practitioners to the occlusal effects on the oral cavity, temporomandibular joints, and muscles of mastication. It is imperative that we realize the interplay of all body systems and effects of occlusal disharmonies and pathologies we now associate with them. Through keen observation, diagnosis, and coordination with other healthcare providers, we can treat patients comprehensively for better overall health.
