Fundamentals of Dental Occlusion and Implants: Where the Rubber Meets the Road

Presented by Ajay K Dhingra, BDS, MSD, FACP

In this lecture, we will delve into the intricate relationship between occlusion principles and their application in implant dentistry. The presentation begins elucidating the fundamental concepts of functional occlusion. Highlighting the importance of mandibular movements, occlusal concepts like canine guidance, group function, and occlusal contacts in natural dentition. This lecture navigates through the application of occlusion principles in various implant scenarios, including single implants, bridges, cantilevers, and full-arch implant-supported prostheses.

Through case studies and real-life examples, attendees will explore the nuances of occlusion management in these diverse clinical situations, gaining insights into achieving optimal occlusal harmony and stability. Special emphasis will be placed on occlusion management in cantilevered restorations, addressing challenges such as load distribution and biomechanical considerations. Participants will learn practical strategies for mitigating risks associated with cantilevers and optimizing occlusal balance for long-term implant success.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Clarify the fundamental concepts of functional occlusion and understand how these principles apply to implant dentistry.
  • Explore the application of these principles in diverse implant scenarios, including single implants, bridges, and full arch implant-supported prostheses.
  • Understand the biomechanics of cantilevers and equip participants with practical strategies for mitigating risks associated with cantilevers, optimizing occlusion, and ensuring long-term success.
